Neela Bhagwat is a familiar name for lovers of Hindustani music the world over. As a front-ranking exponent of the Gwalior style of singing, she has upheld the aesthetic principles of traditional music. As an innovative performer, she has combined the purity of raga with the folk idiom of medieval saint poets like Kabir, Shajo and Meera. These as well as her other innovations relating the traditional form to the contemporary concerns have brought her critical acclaim in India as well as Europe. The prized pupil of revered gurus like Pandit Sharaadchandra Arolkar and Pandit Jal Balaporia, she has performed on major concert platforms, cut CDs, released audio albums and performed over global television channels like Star Plus and Music Asia.

Hailing from Sikandarabad and affiliated with the shrine of Hz Alauddin Ali Sabir (RA) of Kalyar Shareef, Kallan Khan was an innovator in that along with performing classical Sufi texts, he also wrote many new pieces. Most of his recorded oeuvre consists of his own poetry put to music. He had many shagirds but the most famous among these was his nephew Ghulam Fareed Sabri.
Kabir did not believe in Ritualism, the worshiping of Dieties, Brahmanism or the Caste System. Kabir played the role of a teacher and social reformer by the medium of his writings. His greatest work is the Bijak (the “Seedling”), an idea of the fundamental one. This collection of poems elucidates Kabir’s universal view of spirituality. Though his vocabulary is replete with Hindu spiritual concepts, such as Brahman, karma and reincarnation, he vehemently opposed dogmas, both in Hinduism and in Islam. His Hindi was a vernacular, straightforward kind, much like his philosophies. He often advocated leaving aside the Qur’an and Vedas and simply following Sahaja path, or the Simple/Natural Way to oneness in God. He believed in the Vedantic concept of atman, but unlike earlier orthodox Vedantins, he spurned the Hindu societal caste system and murti-pujan (idol worship), showing clear belief in both bhakti and Sufi ideas. The maestros present the entire spectrum of the Tal. The tabla are the drums from North India and are an integral part of all facets of classical music and dance.
Because of her strong influences from the Jaipur-Atrauli Gharanas, Dr. Bhide-Deshpande, has created her own musical style that respects the vocal culture and presentation aesthetics of the Jaipur-Atrauli Gharana. She holds a strong command over the three primary saptaks.

Ashwini Bhide is not only a music scholar but is also blessed with a beautiful voice. I have personally known Ashwini since her early teens and it makes me so happy to see her blossom into such a wonderful Khayal singer. She has earned the reputation of being one of the top young artists of India… Having learnt many old compositions, she has been able to retain the spirit of the tradition through the dialects she has used as well as pay attention to the subject matter! — Pt.

Qawwali is a traditional form of Islamic song found in India and Pakistan. The word Qawwali is derived from the Arabic word Qaol which means ‘axiom’ or ‘dictum’. A Qawwal is one who sings qawwali, or the dictums of the prophets and praises of God. The qawwali is closely linked to the spiritual and artistic life of northern India and Pakistan.

Any mention of the tabla at once brings to my mind the name of Ustad Shaukat Hussain. He was a great soloist but also a wonderful provider of accompaniment to singers. And this is a rare thing, for the soloist derives his energies from the flare of his ego, whereas the art of accompaniment requires the very opposite of an artiste, i.e. an ability to subdue his own performance and use it only to bring out the singer’s talent. Ustad Shaukat Hussain was the best of both worlds, as they say, and in this seemingly contradictory doubleness lay his greatness. Shaukat was born at Phagwara in district Jullundhur, now India, to a family of professional musicians. His father, Mian Maula Bakhsh, was a dhrupad singer. But young Shaukat was drawn to percussion from an early age. He was only 14 when his father died, and so he acquired his primary taaleem from one Pandit Hira Lal, a disciple of Ustad Gami Khan of Delhi. This connection enabled Shaukat to make his way into Delhi’s radio station, and he began his career from AIR Delhi at the age of 18. But the Partition sent his family to Pakistan. Here he got employed at Radio Lahore as a staff artiste, and the fact that he became a disciple of Mian Qadir Bakhsh Pakhawaji only helped to consolidate such a position. Now Shaukat could claim to play in both the Delhi and Lahore styles, and this distinction soon earned him some fame in Lahore’s music scene. He began to play with the leading artistes of the time and quickly became a favorite with the likes of Aashiq Ali Khan, Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, Amir Khan of Indore, Vilayat Khan (sitar), Nazakat and Salamat Ali, Amanat and Fateh, Roshanara Begum and other luminaries of the stage. In the early 90s, Ustad Zakir Hussain, India’s famous young tabla player, paid a visit to Pakistan and was performing at Lahore’s Pearl Continental Hotel. When Ustad Shaukat Hussain walked in, Zakir stopped playing, came down from the stage, stooped before Shaukat and presented him with nazrana, declaring that while his own father, the great Ustad Allah Rakha, was in India at present, his musical father was right here in front of him.

Members of Qawal Najmuddin Saifuddin & Brothers trace their ancestry back to the 13th-century musicians in the very first qawwali group assembled by the poet and composer Amir Khusrau; his songs filled their set, an abridged version of the Sufi ritual called sama (which means “listening”). This generation has abundant vocal gifts. Other qawwali groups that have visited the United States, like the one led by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, usually rely on a commanding lead singer (and sometimes a younger-generation disciple) answered by group call-and-response. Qawal Najmuddin Saifuddin & Brothers revealed four lead-worthy voices, who are indeed brothers.
